Growing from the idea of "hey, let's have coffee" to a full-fledged venture in sustainable, affordable business and community building, the Acorn is more than a Silliman pet project.
It's a movement.
We were sick of seeing the Silliman community every morning in other spots drinking coffee, technically in the same room but not really together. So we created a space for Silliman students to relax, enjoy themselves, and talk to each other over a quality cuppa. Our goal that the shop serves as a space for real connection and deep conversation on campus.
(For information about the Acorn as an event space please see our Events page.)
THE GOLD STANDARD
We are a Platinum-Certified member of the Yale Office of Sustainability's Green Workplace Program. We use only recyclable or compostable to-go materials. Almost all of our furniture was donated by departing Silliman students. We compost our grounds and are committed to reducing waste, increasing awareness and reuse, and encouraging sustainable habits in our customers.
BY EVERYONE, FOR EVERYONE
Coffee culture should not be exclusive. We began the Acorn with this in mind, and our prices reflect this. Charging as little as is possible while still providing a good product (and paying our student baristas) is possible, and we're committed to doing so. The Acorn's many shelves are home to a growing textbook library, so that any student can come and study happily, for free.
